Teaching Goals

My teaching has focused on energy policy and sustainable energy systems. I have three main goals for my students.

First, I provide an interdisciplinary systems perspective that is data-driven and theoretically-informed. Even in more technical courses, I emphasize energy as a socio-technical system, highlighting how institutions, stakeholder perspectives, equity concerns, and economics contribute to technology and sustainability outcomes.

Second, to advance students’ professional skills, I design projects, assignments, and mentoring materials to develop critical thinking, sophisticated interpretation of statistics and data, and strong writing.

Lastly, I am committed to providing a real-world grounding in the complications and trade-offs of policy. Our students want to go out in the world and make a difference, and my goal is to empower them with knowledge, skills, and a clear-eyed pragmatism.
